Rehabilitation and Recovery

Horizon House’s rehabilitation programs provide adults engaged in either mental health or drug and alcohol recovery with appropriate, comprehensive services that enable them to achieve such practical goals as learning to read, improving their basic academic skills, qualifying for job training and/or obtaining competitive employment.

Wellness Alliance

The Wellness Alliance is currently under construction at Horizon House’s 30th Street location. Beginning in December of 2007, the Wellness Alliance will offer a recovery-oriented service without walls, which blends rehabilitation and treatment. The Alliance will also offer recovery and life skills education, academic and employment opportunities, a 24/7 response capability, and an integrated, individualized service approach. Certified Peer Specialists will be on hand to mentor participants and provide support, and participant (and family, when appropriate) involvement in program planning and implementation is a cornerstone of recovery services at the Alliance. Founded on the concepts of choice and self-determination, the goals of the Wellness Alliance are to empower individuals in re-establishing roles in the community, developing personal support networks, and improving quality of life for participants.

Education Programs

Adult Basic Education, General Equivalency Diploma (GED) instruction, and college-bound services are available for individuals enrolled in Horizon House’s outpatient treatment and/or the Wellness Alliance or those active with other agencies funded by the Department of Behavioral Health or the Office of Addiction Service. Students receive academic and financial aid counseling and advising, related support services, i.e. free books and instructional materials, and transportation support.

Education Plus

Horizon House’s Education Plus program began in January 2002 with funding from The Pew Charitable Trusts and the Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health. The program offers individualized supports such as study skills, peer, campus, and life supports to adults with mental disabilities who are attending Philadelphia area colleges and certificate programs. Upon graduating from college, in addition to throughout the course of obtaining an education, employment supports are available to program participants. Education Plus meets the needs of many students with a diagnosis of mental illness who believe that attaining a post-secondary education is a distant dream. The program’s philosophy is to offer individualized services within a college environment and was created to help program participants reach their educational goals; an integral step to obtaining skilled jobs and a higher quality of life within their communities.

Employment Services

Horizon House has offered employment options since 1959. For many people who receive rehabilitation services from Horizon House today, employment is an important goal because it helps them to move toward economic self-sufficiency, and gives them the opportunity to lead a more normal life, integrated into the community.

Horizon House’s employment services department assesses individuals in recovery in terms of their job skills, experience and goals and offers them employment options through its Supported Employment Services and Career Planning Services. These Horizon House programs center on employment opportunities within the community, providing one-on-one, on-the-job training and any other supports necessary to promote recovery.
