Horizon House brought home the hardware at the recent Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services Points of Transformation Awards! Horizon House had five award winners at this event, which celebrates and honors Direct Support Professionals who dedicate themselves to their communities. Featured award winners from Horizon House included Developmental Services Chief Services Officer Linda Washington Brown (Dedicated Leadership Award) and Developmental Services staff member Robert (Points of Transformation Award). We also had a featured speaker represent our Agency as Developmental Services staff member Billamin spoke at the ceremony about how important his work is to him and how he wants to positively impact all participants he serves. We are very proud of all of you for these well-deserved accolades!
In Memory of Arlene Solomon
Last week, we had the honor of hosting a dedication ceremony in memory of Arlene Solomon, a devoted Horizon House staff member who passed away in 2022. A fierce supporter of our participants and their right to education, Arlene founded our Education Plus program, which provides mobile academic and social support to participants in college or those interested in furthering their education. This program has now helped 75 participants earn degrees or post-secondary certifications. The plaque dedicated to her and the incredible impact she has left will forever hang in the Education Plus office at our New Market West Headquarters. Thank you to the Solomon family for being on hand and for the continued support of our mission. And thank you to all who came to share their memories of Arlene.
9/11 Memorial Stair Climb
This past Saturday morning, Horizon House was privileged to sponsor the Philadelphia 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at the Wells Fargo Center. Members of our team joined countless others in climbing the arena’s lower bowl stairs for the equivalent of 110 floors, the same number of floors in the World Trade Center towers, for the continued support of families of fallen firefighters. We also had a resource table on hand to provide information on our services and the work we do around the region. Thank you to everyone involved for a great morning!
Horizon House Fall Festival “The Most Magical Place on Stokley”
Our annual Fall Festival took place last Thursday and we wanted to share some snapshots from all the fun! The theme was “The Most Magical Place on Stokley”. Our participants and staff from around the region came to our Stokley Street office parking lot dressed in their favorite Disney-inspired outfits. We had a most magical time thanks to our magic makers of the day, including staff volunteers, representatives from our executive team, our food truck vendors, our resource tables, and our DJ. Our participants were definitely satisfied!
Journey of Hope Kickball Tournament
Recently, our Susquehanna Park location participated in another Journey of Hope kickball tournament in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia. They competed alongside three other behavioral health organizations for a shot at taking home the tournament trophy. Susquehanna participants were the reigning champs from 2023, and we are happy to report that our program won again! Congrats again to all involved!

Unity in the Community Block Party and Backpack Giveaway
It was a pleasure to be a part of yesterday’s Unity in the Community Summer Block Party and Backpack Giveaway yesterday at 60th and Market Streets in West Philly. PEACE Program Alumni Picnic in the Park
Today, our PEACE program participants and staff put together a small get-together event in Penn Treaty Park alongside the Delaware River. The event is a quarterly outing provided to current and graduated PEACE program participants. PEACE program alumni are heavily involved in the planning of this event and work together as part of an alumni planning committee. Today’s event had lunch, tie-dying, karaoke, and a clothing giveaway. It was a pleasure to attend this event and we look forward to future events alongside our PEACE program.
