Philadelphia County Mental Health Services
Treatment

Treatment programs for people diagnosed with psychiatric disabilities (or co-occurring drug and alcohol addictions) are designed to provide community-based alternatives to inpatient care. Although hospitalization options are an important component of the continuum of care needed by individuals served by Horizon House, our experience has shown that most behavioral health needs can be addressed in the community.

Horizon House treatment programs are designed, among other things, to help the individual learn to more effectively manage the mental illness, to recognize and address signs of decompensation, and to learn and practice new coping strategies to prevent relapse and move towards recovery. Horizon House day treatment programs are located at 120 S. 30th Street in Philadelphia.

Behavioral Health Center

Horizon House’s mental health outpatient therapy service treats individuals 18 or older with psychiatric disabilities (or co-occurring drug and alcohol addictions). People who use this service meet medical assistance or ability to pay eligibility criteria and are able to engage in outpatient psychotherapy. Individual and group therapy sessions are conducted by credentialed staff and can be held as frequently as three times a week or as infrequently as once a month, depending on individual need.

Medication Management

Horizon House staff psychiatrists and psychiatric nurses educate people about administering and monitoring their medications, as well as the possible side effects of prescription drugs, to help them manage the symptoms of their illnesses. Persons diagnosed with schizophrenia are connected to Horizon House’s Clozapine Clinic. In addition to managing the administration of medications, individuals enrolled in the clinic are able to participate in psycho-educational groups aimed at helping them learn new ways of interacting with others.
